Lets Start On Your Counselling Journey!
My name is Jocelyn (she/her), and I am a Master of Counselling student from City University. I am completing my practicum training at Strive Counselling under the supervision of the clinic’s director, William Lee, and the guidance of my colleagues at the clinic. Being an Asian-Canadian and a first-generation immigrant, I straddle the multicultural identity of being Taiwanese, Chinese, and Canadian. I am fluent in both Mandarin-Chinese and English, and offering counselling services in either language. My cultural background has provided me with an understanding of the pressures stemming from filial piety, traditional ideals of marriage and family, and patterns of intergenerational conflicts. These personal experiences have acted as a source of motivation for me to pursue a career in counselling, and to build a professional skill set that helps my clients navigate these very issues.
Over the past 12 years, I have taken on several roles that involve helping others navigate their careers and mental health, including being a career counsellor, management consultant, and corporate leader as a Chartered Professional in Human Resources. My experience in these roles have allowed me to work closely with issues that include navigating stressful work-place culture, perfectionism, addiction, issues of self-worth and self-esteem, and anxiety and depression. Additionally, I am well-versed in conducting conflict resolution and mediation.
In our sessions, you can expect a passionate, supportive, and collaborative counsellor. You will be empowered to make choices, create goals, and most importantly, move at a pace that works for you. We will work together to build awareness around your thoughts and emotions, and to explore any tendencies that might be preventing you from becoming the person you want to be. With couples, I aim to improve communication and empathetic understanding. We will learn about your values, patterns, and how to foster a more supportive and loving relationship.
When I’m not seeing clients, I’m a fun-loving foodie who enjoys basking in the sun and playing with my dog (Dobby). Another one of my passion projects is the Vancouver Ceramics Studio, where I get my hands a little dirty making new creations as a beginner. I am a certified yoga instructor that enjoys meditation at the park or by the beach. I also like to strap on my boxing gloves to blow off some steam and get reinvigorated through EDM. Lastly, I am the founder of Tiger Cub Therapy (@tigercubtherapy), which is a platform that provides peer support for ‘Tiger Cubs’ – those who experienced growing up in a traditional Asian home with a Tiger Mom or Dad.
Looking forward to meeting you!
