What is depression?

Depression is more than just feeling sad; it can be a deep, persistent sense of hopelessness that can impact every part of your life.  Depression can feel like a heavy cloud you can’t shake off, or an unbearable weight that seems to keep you from moving forward. People who are depressed are often told to “get over it” or to “think on the bright side”, which can make you feel even worse. Depression is one of the most common mental health conditions that affects people, with one in four Canadian adults reporting experiencing moderate to severe depression as of 2023

Signs You Might Be Experiencing Depression

Depression can manifest in various ways, and recognizing the signs is crucial for seeking appropriate help. Here are some common symptoms:

Sleep Issues

Experiencing insomnia, waking up early, or sleeping too much.

Losing Interests

Losing interest in activities that you once enjoyed, including hobbies, social interactions, or sex.

Change in Appetite or Weight

Noticeable weight loss or gain, or significant changes in appetite. Finding yourself with low appetite and low energy

Having Difficulty Concentrating

Trouble focusing, making decisions, or remembering things.

Feeling Restless

Being easily irritated, restless, or physically agitated.

Low Self-Esteem

Experiencing feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or self-blame.

Feeling Persistently Sad

Experiencing a deep sense of sadness or emptiness that doesn’t go away.

Lack of Motivation

Feeling unmotivated, and not wanting to do anything

Thoughts of Harming Yourself

Frequent thoughts about death, dying, or suicide, or attempting suicide.
